Fly Into Kingston or Montego Bay? How to Pick Your Jamaica Airport
Fly into Kingston or Montego Bay? Our drivers explain which airport fits your hotel, with real drive times from both sides.

Fly into Kingston or Montego Bay? For most visitors the answer is Montego Bay, because that is where the north coast and Negril hotels are, and where most of the flights land. Fly into Kingston instead if your trip is built around the capital, the Blue Mountains or Port Antonio. We run private transfers out of both airports, so here is how we help guests decide.
What is the difference between the two airports?
Sangster International (MBJ) sits right on the edge of Montego Bay. You see the hotels along the shore from the window before the wheels touch down. It handles most of the island's visitor traffic, so it has the most direct flights from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, and by far the busiest arrival hall.
Norman Manley International (KIN) is in Kingston, out on the long strip of land between the harbour and the open sea. It is smaller and quieter, and most people on your flight will be Jamaicans coming home or business travelers. There are fewer flights, so fares and times can be less convenient, but immigration and baggage usually move quickly.
Which airport is closer to my hotel?
This is the question that settles it for nearly everyone. Rough drive times with one of our drivers in normal traffic:
From Montego Bay airport:
- Montego Bay hotels: 10 to 30 minutes
- Falmouth: about 40 minutes
- Negril: about an hour and a half
- Ocho Rios: about an hour and a half to two hours
- Kingston: about three to three and a half hours
From Kingston airport:
- New Kingston hotels: about 30 minutes
- Blue Mountains (Irish Town, Strawberry Hill): about an hour
- Ocho Rios: about two hours on the North-South Highway
- Port Antonio: about two to two and a half hours
- Montego Bay: about three to three and a half hours
- Negril: four hours or more
If your hotel is in Negril, Montego Bay, Falmouth or Ocho Rios, fly into Montego Bay. If you are staying in Kingston, the Blue Mountains or Port Antonio, fly into Kingston, and do not let a cheaper fare into Montego Bay tempt you unless you have priced the extra three hours each way. Ocho Rios is the one place that works from either side, and it has a third option too, which we covered in our post on flying into Ian Fleming airport. How long is the drive from Kingston to the north coast?
The North-South Highway changed this trip. It is a toll road that climbs out of Kingston, runs through the hills of St Catherine and comes down just outside Ocho Rios. The old route over Mount Diablo was slow and winding. The highway is wide, well surfaced and lit at the toll plazas, and we drive it after dark without a second thought. The toll is added to your booking as one flat charge, so there is nothing to sort out at the booths.
Kingston to Montego Bay is a longer day. The highway gets you to Ocho Rios, then it is the coast road west through St Ann and Trelawny. Count on about three hours of driving plus a stop to stretch and eat. We do this run, but if nothing is pulling you to Kingston, the right fix is to book the other airport.
Can I fly into one airport and out of the other?
Yes, and it is a good way to see two sides of the island in one trip. A common plan is to land in Montego Bay, spend the first few days on the beach, then transfer across to Kingston for a night or two and fly home from there. Kingston gives you the Bob Marley Museum, the Culture Yard in Trench Town, a working Blue Mountain coffee farm and lunch with a view at Strawberry Hill. We run all of these, and they are far easier from a Kingston hotel than from the north coast.
The transfer between the two can be a tour day in itself. Going east from Montego Bay, we can stop at Dunn's River Falls for the climb, have lunch in Ocho Rios, then take the highway down to Kingston in the late afternoon. One-way transfers are charged as a single trip, so there is no penalty for using two airports. If you are deciding between a Kingston day trip and a proper stay, our post on whether a Kingston day trip is worth it walks through the trade-offs.
What is arriving at Kingston airport like?
The arrival hall is small, and our driver waits outside with a sign with your name on it. The road from the airport runs along the sea for a few minutes before it reaches the Harbour View roundabout and turns into the city. Kingston traffic is real, especially on weekday mornings from about 7 to 9 and in the afternoon from about 4 to 6, so if you are heading straight to the North-South Highway and your flight lands in rush hour, add half an hour to the estimates above. Arrivals after dark are fine. The highway is quiet at night and the drive to Ocho Rios is often quicker than in the daytime.
If you want a supermarket stop on the way to your hotel, tell us when you book and we will plan it in.
Which airport should you pick?
Pick the airport closest to where you will sleep, then let us handle the road. Tell us your flight number and hotel and we will quote the trip from either side, toll included. You can book private airport transfers from Montego Bay or Kingston, or book a tour for the transfer day if you want to break the drive at a waterfall on the way.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Kingston airport from Ocho Rios?
About two hours with our driver, using the North-South Highway toll road. The trip is longer in Kingston rush hour, roughly 7 to 9 in the morning and 4 to 6 in the afternoon, so add about half an hour if your flight lands then. The toll is included as a flat charge on your booking.
Can I fly into Montego Bay and fly home from Kingston?
Yes. We run one-way private transfers in both directions and charge them as a single trip, so there is no penalty for using two airports. Many guests spend the first days on the north coast or in Negril, then transfer to Kingston for the Bob Marley Museum, Trench Town and the Blue Mountains before flying out.
Which Jamaica airport has more flights?
Montego Bay (Sangster International) has far more direct flights from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, because most of the island's hotels are on that side. Kingston (Norman Manley International) has fewer flights and a smaller arrival hall, which also means shorter lines once you land.
Is Kingston airport close to the Blue Mountains?
It is the right airport for them. Irish Town and Strawberry Hill are about an hour from the airport, and a Blue Mountain coffee farm visit is a comfortable day trip from any Kingston hotel. From Montego Bay the same trip means three hours of driving each way.
