How Far Is Your Hotel From Montego Bay Airport? Real Drive Times

Most hotels in and around Montego Bay sit 10 to 20 minutes from Sangster International. Falmouth is about 40 minutes, Runaway Bay is around an hour and a half, and Negril and Ocho Rios both land somewhere between an hour and a half and two hours. Kingston is the long one, roughly three and a half to four hours depending on the route.

That is the short answer. Here is the fuller one, from drivers who run these roads every week of the year.

How long is the drive from Montego Bay airport to each area?

These are the times we plan around for a private vehicle, door to door, with no stops along the way:

• Montego Bay town, the Hip Strip, Doctor's Cave Beach: 10 to 15 minutes
• Ironshore and Rose Hall: about 15 to 20 minutes
• Falmouth: about 40 minutes
• Duncans and the Trelawny coast: about 50 minutes
• Lucea: about an hour
• Runaway Bay and Discovery Bay: an hour and 15 to an hour and a half
• Negril: an hour and a half to two hours
• Ocho Rios: an hour and 45 to two hours
• Treasure Beach: around two and a half hours
• Kingston: three and a half to four hours

If your hotel is not on this list, tell us the name when you book and we will give you a straight answer before you pay. We would rather set the expectation properly than have you sitting in the van wondering why it is taking longer than the website you read said it would.

Why does the same drive take longer on some days?

Jamaica's north coast runs on one main road. It is a good road for most of the way, but it passes straight through the middle of small towns, and that is where the time goes.

Falmouth is the big one. On a cruise ship day the town fills up and traffic through the centre crawls. Duncans, Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay each have a school and a market, so weekday mornings around 8 and afternoons around 3 are slower. Heavy rain in the hills can put water and gravel on the road near Salem and Rio Bueno, and we ease off when that happens.

The Negril road is different. Past Hopewell it narrows, hugs the coast and winds through Lucea and Green Island. It is a pretty drive but it is not a road to rush on, and honest drivers do not rush on it.

How much time should you leave between landing and pulling off?

Plan for immigration and baggage to take between 30 minutes and an hour and a half. On a quiet evening you can be outside in half an hour. On a Saturday afternoon when four or five big aircraft land close together, the hall backs up and an hour and a half is realistic.

Your driver waits for you. We track the flight, so a delay in Atlanta or Toronto does not leave you stranded, and we do not start a clock on you the moment the wheels touch down. What we do suggest is this: if you land in the afternoon and your hotel is two hours away, do not book an excursion for that same day. Land, ride, eat, sleep. Start the tours fresh the next morning.

What is the ride actually like?

Cold water in the vehicle, air conditioning, and a driver who will talk if you want to talk and leave you alone if you would rather look out the window. On the longer runs to Negril, Ocho Rios or Kingston we build in a stop, usually a bathroom and a snack, and if you want a proper jerk stop or a cold Red Stripe on the way, say the word and we will pull in.

The stretch between Montego Bay and Falmouth is the prettiest part of most transfers, with the sea on your left the whole way. Ask your driver about the sugar estates and the old Georgian buildings in Falmouth town. Most of us grew up around here and we like being asked.

Which areas suit you if you do not want a long drive?

If you are coming for three or four nights and you want your feet in the sand within half an hour of landing, stay in Montego Bay, Ironshore or Rose Hall. Falmouth is still comfortable at about 40 minutes.

For a week or more, the drive to Ocho Rios or Negril is worth it. Those two hours are not lost time. You see the country you flew here for, and by the time you check in you already know where the good patty shop is.

How do you plan the ride back to the airport?

Work backwards. For an international flight, be at Sangster about three hours before departure. Add your drive time, then add a 30 minute cushion for traffic.

So a 2:00 pm flight out of Montego Bay, with a hotel in Negril, means pickup around 8:30 or 9:00 in the morning. From Ocho Rios, similar. From Rose Hall, around 10:30. Tell us your flight number when you book the return leg and we will set the pickup time for you.
