Is a Kingston Day Trip Worth It From the North Coast?

If you are staying in Ocho Rios, a Kingston day trip is worth it. The toll highway puts the city about an hour and a half away, so you get a real day there and you are back at your hotel for dinner. From Montego Bay it is closer to four hours each way, which is a different kind of day. Still doable, but you are handing most of your daylight to the road.

How long is the drive to Kingston?

From Ocho Rios we take the toll highway that cuts straight through the Mount Rosser hills. About an hour and a half, sometimes a little less on a quiet morning. It is a modern four-lane road, so you skip all the winding and braking of the old route. There is a toll on it, and we build that into your quote so nobody is digging for cash at the booth.

From Montego Bay you are looking at roughly four hours in each direction. We usually run it along the north coast to Ocho Rios first and then drop south on that same highway. People sometimes ask about the inland route through Mandeville. It is not faster and the road is harder on everyone, so we stay with the coast.

From Negril, add about another hour and a half to the Montego Bay figure. At that point we normally tell guests to sleep over or pick something closer to home.

What can you actually fit into one day?

Coming from Ocho Rios, a comfortable day is two or three stops. Most of our guests want the Bob Marley Museum, which is his old house and recording studio, and they want to drive through the city itself to see what Kingston looks like away from the postcards. If reggae is the reason you came to Jamaica, add the Culture Yard in Trench Town. That is the first place Bob Marley lived when his family moved to town, and the guides there grew up in that neighbourhood. It is a small, plain yard, and that is exactly the point of it.

If you would rather be up high than downtown, we take the road into the hills instead. Strawberry Hill sits above the city with a light meal and a view straight down over the roofs, and the Blue Mountain coffee tour goes further up to a working plantation for a tasting. Coming from Montego Bay, be realistic with yourself. One main stop plus a drive through the city is a full day. Squeeze in three and you will see all of them in a rush and remember none of them.

Is Kingston safe for visitors?

Kingston is a working city, not a resort strip, and the honest answer is that it depends on where you are and who you are with. The parts visitors go to are fine. The trouble is that first-timers do not know where one part of town ends and the next begins, and a wrong turn in a rental car is how people end up somewhere they never meant to be.

That is most of the reason our guests book a driver for this one instead of driving themselves. Our drivers know the city, they park where it makes sense, and they stay with the vehicle while you are inside. You are never standing on a corner with your phone out working out where you are.

Should you stay the night instead?

If you are coming from Montego Bay or Negril and Kingston is the thing you came to Jamaica for, sleep over. The city is at its best in the evening, and you are not watching the clock from lunchtime onward. We can run you down one day and bring you back the next.

If you are already in Ocho Rios, a day trip is genuinely fine and most people come back happy with it.

What should you bring?

Kingston runs hotter than the coast because there is no sea breeze in the middle of the city. Light clothes, a hat, and more water than you think you need. If the hills are on your list, throw in a light jacket, because it cools off up there in the evening and that catches people out every time.

The museums keep you on your feet for an hour or so, so wear shoes you can walk in. Carry some cash for small things and for tipping the guides, since they work for it.
