Ian Fleming International Airport: Should You Fly Into Ocho Rios?
Ian Fleming International Airport is 20 minutes from Ocho Rios, but few flights land there. Here is how to choose it or Montego Bay.

If your hotel is in Ocho Rios, Ian Fleming International Airport (airport code OCJ) is the closest runway to your bed, about 20 minutes east of town at Boscobel. The catch is that very few flights land there. Most of our Ocho Rios guests still fly into Montego Bay and ride about two hours along the north coast with us, and for most people that is the right call. Here is how we explain the choice when guests ask.
Where is Ian Fleming International Airport?
It sits on the coast road in Boscobel, St. Mary, roughly 10 miles east of Ocho Rios. From the terminal door to the hotels on the main strip in Ocho Rios is about 15 to 25 minutes in our van, depending on where you are staying. Hotels out toward Tower Isle and Oracabessa are even closer, some under 10 minutes. The airport is named after the author of the James Bond books, who wrote them at his house, Goldeneye, a few minutes down the road in Oracabessa.
The terminal is small. One building, a short walk from the plane, and you are out front where the vans park within minutes of landing. There is no long immigration hall and no crowd. On a good day our drivers have guests in the van before they would have cleared the line in Montego Bay.
Which airlines fly into Ian Fleming?
This is the part that decides it for most travelers. For years the airport mostly handled private planes, charters and small island hops. American Airlines started scheduled flights from Miami in early 2024 on a small regional jet, and as of our last check that route is still the only regular commercial service from the United States. It runs a few days a week, and the schedule changes with the season, so look up your actual travel dates rather than trusting a blog (ours included). Flights are usually dearer per seat than a Montego Bay fare, and they fill up.
If you are not coming through Miami, you will almost certainly connect there or land in Montego Bay (MBJ) or Kingston (KIN) instead.
Is it worth flying into Ian Fleming instead of Montego Bay?
Here is the honest math.
Fly into Ian Fleming and you save roughly an hour and a half each way on the road. For a short trip, say three or four nights, that is real time back at the pool. If the fare is close to what you would pay into Montego Bay and the flight days line up with your dates, take it.
Fly into Montego Bay and you get far more flight options, usually a cheaper ticket, and more flexibility if something goes wrong. The drive from Sangster to Ocho Rios runs about an hour and a half to two hours on the north coast highway, and it is a good first look at the island. We stop for a cold drink or a jerk chicken break if you ask. Guests who book private airport transfers with us are met at the arrivals hall either way, so the longer drive is not a stressful one.
Our plain advice: pick the flight first and let the airport follow. Do not pay a lot more for a ticket just to shave the drive. Do grab the Boscobel flight if the price and days work, because the arrival is lovely and quiet.
What is pickup like at Ian Fleming?
Our driver waits right outside the terminal entrance with a sign. There is a small parking area in front of the building, so the van is steps away. Bags come out fast because the plane is small. Expect to be on the road within 10 to 15 minutes of touching down, which is a very different feeling from a busy afternoon in Montego Bay.
Two things to know. The airport has limited services, so get your bottled water and snacks on the plane or wait until we pass a shop on the way into town. And mobile signal and currency exchange are thin on the ground there, so change a little cash before you fly or plan to use a card at the hotel. Transfers are booked online in advance, so there is nothing to sort out at the airport.
Can you fly home from the Ocho Rios airport?
Yes, if your flight leaves from there. Because the terminal is small, check-in and security take a fraction of the time you would allow in Montego Bay. We generally collect Ocho Rios guests about two to two and a half hours before an international departure from Boscobel, which still leaves time to spare. Compare that with a Montego Bay departure, where we pick up Ocho Rios guests around five hours before the flight to cover the two-hour drive plus about three hours inside the terminal.
Some guests mix the two: in through Montego Bay because the fare was better, out through OCJ because the flight day suited them. Our team handles both ends, just tell us the airport codes when you book.
Which airport works for other towns?
OCJ only makes sense for the Ocho Rios stretch, roughly from Runaway Bay through Oracabessa and Port Maria. For Negril it is the wrong side of the island entirely, about four hours by road, so fly into Montego Bay. For Kingston and the Blue Mountains, Norman Manley in Kingston is closest, though Boscobel is a workable backup at around an hour and a half over the hills. We run transfers from all three airports, so we can meet you wherever your ticket lands.
If you are planning an Ocho Rios stay and want to talk through flight days, drive times and what excursions fit around your arrival, send us your dates. You can book a tour or a transfer online in a few minutes, and we will confirm your pickup at whichever airport you choose.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Ian Fleming International Airport from Ocho Rios?
About 10 miles. The drive from the terminal to hotels on the main Ocho Rios strip takes roughly 15 to 25 minutes with us. Hotels toward Tower Isle and Oracabessa are closer, some under 10 minutes from the airport.
Which airlines fly to Ian Fleming International Airport?
As of our last check, American Airlines runs the only regular commercial flights from the United States, from Miami on a small regional jet a few days a week. The schedule changes by season, so confirm your exact dates with the airline. The rest of the traffic is private planes, charters and small island hops.
Is Ian Fleming or Montego Bay better for an Ocho Rios hotel?
Ian Fleming saves about an hour and a half of driving each way, so take it if the fare and flight days suit you. Montego Bay has far more flights and usually cheaper tickets. With a private transfer booked, the two-hour drive from Montego Bay is an easy one, so choose the flight first and let the airport follow.
How early should we leave for a flight out of Ian Fleming?
The terminal is small and the lines are short, so we usually collect Ocho Rios guests about two to two and a half hours before an international departure. That is far less than the roughly five hours we allow when leaving Ocho Rios for a Montego Bay flight, which has a two-hour drive and bigger crowds.
