If you are staying in Ocho Rios and want a proper beach day, the right beach depends on how far you feel like going. Ocho Rios Bay Beach (everyone calls it Turtle Beach) is right in town and costs about US$10 to get in. Mahogany Beach is a quieter cove a few minutes east, and James Bond Beach in Oracabessa is the half-day trip that earns the drive.

Ochi is a waterfall and river town first, so a lot of our guests ask where the actual beach is. Here is how our drivers answer that, beach by beach.

Is Ocho Rios Bay Beach (Turtle Beach) worth the entry fee?

Yes, if you want the easy option. The beach curves around the bay in the middle of town, a short walk from the cruise pier and the shops on Main Street. The government body that runs it raised the gate price in early 2025. Visitors now pay about US$10 per adult and about US$7 per child, and the fee usually includes a chair. There are restrooms, showers and changing rooms, and vendors on the sand renting jet skis, banana boats and glass bottom boat rides. Bring cash for those, they rarely take cards.

The water is calm and shallow a long way out, which makes it the best Ocho Rios beach for small children and nervous swimmers. It opens in the morning and closes in the late afternoon, so it is not a sunset beach, and shade is limited once the sun is high.

One honest warning: on a day when two or three cruise ships are in port, the sand is packed by late morning. If your hotel is in town, go early, or save the beach for a day with no ship. Our drivers always know the ship schedule, so ask us the night before.

Which Ocho Rios beach is quieter?

Mahogany Beach. It is a small cove about five minutes east of the centre of town, on the road toward Tower Isle. There is a bar and grill, a handful of chairs, and a stretch of sand that rarely fills up because the cruise crowds do not know it is there. Expect a small charge at the gate, a few dollars at most. The water is clear and good for a swim, and there are trees for shade in the afternoon.

It is not an all-day beach. Most of our guests do two or three hours here, eat, and then go on to Dunn's River or back to the hotel.

Is James Bond Beach worth the drive from Ocho Rios?

For a half day, yes. James Bond Beach is in Oracabessa, about ten miles east of Ochi, roughly a 25 to 30 minute drive along the coast road. The name comes from Ian Fleming, who wrote the Bond novels at his house on the hill above it. The beach itself is a grassy point with sand on either side, calm water, and green hills behind you instead of hotels.

It is a private beach park with a small entry fee, around US$5 per person, and it has a seafood bar and grill, restrooms and changing rooms. It also hosts big concerts a few times a year, and on those days it is closed to regular visitors, so we check before we drive out. Mornings and weekdays are the quiet times.

What about the beach at Dunn's River Falls?

There is a beach at the bottom of the falls, and it is included in your Dunn's River entry. It is where the climb starts, and the cold river water running into the sea keeps it cool. We do not sell it as a beach day, though. On a port day it is one of the busiest spots on the island, and the lockers, vendors and climbing groups all share the same space. We wrote a separate guide to climbing Dunn's River Falls if you want the full picture.

Can you reach the Ocho Rios beaches from a cruise ship?

Easily. Turtle Beach is within walking distance of the pier. Mahogany Beach is a short private car ride. James Bond Beach is doable on a ship day if you have at least six hours ashore and leave as soon as you clear the terminal. Our cruise port guide explains how we time private shore days so you are back well before all aboard.

What should you bring?

Water shoes help at Mahogany and James Bond, where there are rocks and sea grass near the entry points. Turtle Beach is soft sand the whole way. Bring small US bills for chairs, drinks and the watersport vendors, a towel from the hotel (the beaches do not supply them), and reef-safe sunscreen. Leave valuables in the hotel safe.

Not every stretch of sand in Jamaica is open to visitors, so if you are wondering about hotel beaches and access rules, read our post on public beach access in Jamaica.

How we run a beach day in Ocho Rios

Most guests book us for the day rather than for a single ride. We pick you up at the hotel, drop you at the gate, and come back when you call, so there is no bargaining with route taxis in wet clothes. A common plan is Dunn's River first thing, before the ships, then lunch and a swim at Mahogany, then jerk chicken in town on the way home. From Montego Bay the drive to Ochi is about an hour and a half on the highway, so this works as a day trip, and we can add the Clear Kayak Photoshoot or Sea Tubing on the bay if you want more than sand.

Ready to plan it? Book a tour with us, or arrange your private airport transfers and tell us which beach you have in mind.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Ocho Rios Bay Beach (Turtle Beach) cost?

Visitors pay about US$10 per adult and about US$7 per child since the fee increase in early 2025, and a chair is usually included. Jamaican residents pay a lower rate in local dollars. Bring cash, because the gate and the vendors on the sand do not reliably take cards.

Which Ocho Rios beach is best for kids?

Turtle Beach, because the water stays shallow and calm a long way out and there are restrooms and showers on site. Go early on a cruise ship day, since it fills up by late morning. Mahogany Beach is the quieter backup if the town beach is full.

How far is James Bond Beach from Ocho Rios?

About ten miles east in Oracabessa, which is roughly a 25 to 30 minute drive along the coast road. Treat it as a half-day trip. It closes to regular visitors on concert days, so we confirm before driving out.

Can I do a beach and Dunn's River Falls on the same day?

Yes, and it is the most common plan we run in Ocho Rios. Climb the falls first thing in the morning before the cruise groups arrive, then spend the afternoon at Mahogany or Turtle Beach. From Montego Bay it is a long but comfortable day, roughly nine to ten hours door to door including the drive each way.
