Jamaica Cruise Port Excursions: How to Plan a Private Shore Day

Yes, you can book a private shore excursion in Jamaica instead of the one your cruise line sells, and plenty of our guests do. We pick up at the Falmouth and Ocho Rios cruise piers for select tours, run the day for your group only, and plan the return around your ship's all aboard time. The trade-off is that an independent tour is your responsibility and not the ship's, so the timing has to be built right from the start.
Can you book your own excursion instead of the ship's?
You can. Nothing stops a cruise passenger from walking off the pier and getting into a private vehicle. The real difference is who carries the risk. If you book through the cruise line and the tour runs late, the ship holds for you. If you book independently and you are late, the ship sails. That is the honest version, and it is why we plan backwards from your all aboard time rather than forward from your docking time.
What you get in return is a day that belongs to your group. No coach with forty strangers, no waiting in a car park for the last two people, no fixed lunch stop you did not choose. If somebody wants twenty more minutes at the falls, that is a conversation with your driver and not a committee.
Where do you meet your driver at the port?
Falmouth and Ocho Rios both have a controlled pier area, so your driver waits just outside it rather than at the gangway. We send you the exact meeting spot and your driver's phone number before your port day, and the driver is there with a name sign before your ship is cleared. Give yourself a few minutes for the walk out. Falmouth has a shopping village between the ship and the road, and it is longer than it looks.
What can you actually fit into a cruise day?
It depends on where you dock, and that matters more than people expect.
From Falmouth, Martha Brae bamboo rafting is about fifteen minutes away, which makes it the easiest half day on the north coast. Montego Bay is roughly forty minutes west. Dunn's River Falls and Ocho Rios are about an hour to an hour and fifteen east, so the falls are very doable, but they take close to two and a half hours of driving out of your day.
From the Ocho Rios pier you are close to a lot. Dunn's River Falls is around ten minutes away. The Blue Hole is about half an hour inland. White River tubing sits between the two.
Negril is the one we usually talk people out of. It is roughly two hours each way from Falmouth, and on a seven hour port call that leaves you very little in the middle and no room for a flat tyre.
A realistic cruise day is one main attraction plus one smaller stop. Two big attractions is possible from Ocho Rios and tight from Falmouth.
How do you make sure you get back before all aboard?
We work to your all aboard time and not your departure time, and the two are usually thirty to sixty minutes apart. Then we take another hour off the top as buffer. On a Falmouth to Ocho Rios day that means leaving the falls earlier than you would like, and we would rather have that conversation at the falls than on the road.
A few other things keep the day honest. We hit the busy attractions first thing rather than at midday, because when three ships are in, Dunn's River gets crowded by ten. Your driver keeps your ship's name and sail time written down. And if the north coast road backs up, the driver knows the way around it.
What should you bring off the ship?
Swimwear under your clothes, so you are not queueing for a changing room. Closed-toe shoes if you are doing ATV or the falls, because the rocks are slippery and flip flops will not hold. Sunscreen, a hat, and some cash for souvenirs, snacks and tips. Your ship card and a photo ID. Leave the big bags on board. Our vehicles are private, but nobody wants to carry a beach tote up a waterfall.
How do you book a cruise day with us?
Tell us your ship, your port, and your docking and all aboard times, and we will tell you honestly what fits. Most tour packages need a minimum of four people, and solo tours start at one. We send a full quote within 24 hours, and you pay nothing until you approve it. Cancellations more than 72 hours before the activity get the deposit back in full.

Yes. Anyone can leave the pier with a private operator in Jamaica. The difference is that the ship will hold for its own tours but not for an independent one, so the return has to be planned properly. We build our cruise days backwards from your all aboard time with about an hour of buffer on top.

What happens if my ship gets into port late?
Tell your driver as soon as you know. We rebuild the day around the shorter window, usually by dropping the furthest stop rather than rushing everything. Cancellations more than 72 hours before the activity are eligible for a full deposit refund, and within 72 hours they are non-refundable.
