Ziplining in Jamaica: What Your First Ride Is Really Like

Ziplining in Jamaica is shorter and calmer than most people expect. Here is what the first launch really feels like.

Ziplining in Jamaica is a two to three hour trip through the bush on a set of steel cables, with a guide harnessing you up and sending you off one line at a time. The rides themselves are short, often ten to fifteen seconds each, and the course is built so the first line is the easy one. Most people who tell us they are nervous in the van are asking for another go by the third platform.

We drive guests to zipline courses from Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril, so we get the same questions every week. Here are the honest answers.

What actually happens when you get to a zipline course?

You check in, sign a waiver and get sized for a harness. The staff strap you in, buckle a helmet on and give a short briefing on how to sit back, where to keep your hands and how they will slow you down at the far end. Then you walk or ride up to the first platform.

At the platform a guide clips your trolley onto the cable, checks the carabiners, checks them again, and tells you to sit down into the harness and lift your feet. That is the whole job. You do not jump, push off or steer anything. A second guide is waiting on the far platform to catch you and unclip you.

Most courses run somewhere between five and nine lines, with a short walk or a rope bridge between them. The last line is usually the longest and the fastest, which is the way it should be.

How long does a zipline tour take?

Count on about two to three hours on the course itself once you arrive. Add the driving and it works out to roughly half a day door to door for most hotels. From Montego Bay the closer courses are usually under an hour each way, and from Ocho Rios it is a shorter run up into the hills. We build the timing around your day, so if you have a dinner reservation or a late checkout, tell us and we will work backwards from it.

What should you wear and bring?

Closed shoes. Sneakers or water shoes, never flip-flops or slides, because you will be on wooden platforms and dirt trails between the lines. Shorts or light pants both work, but the harness straps sit high on your thighs, so very short shorts get uncomfortable fast. Tie long hair back and leave hoop earrings and loose chains at the hotel.

Bring bug spray, because the bush holds mosquitoes even in the middle of the day. Bring small cash for the photo desk and for tipping the guides, who work hard and are the reason nervous people finish the course. Keep your phone zipped into a pocket or on a strap. Plenty of phones have gone into the trees from thirty feet up and none of them came back.

Is there a weight or age limit for ziplining in Jamaica?

Yes, and it is worth checking before you book rather than at the counter. Most courses on the island set a maximum somewhere around 250 to 265 pounds, a minimum around 60 to 70 pounds, and take children from about six years old with an adult riding too. The exact numbers move from course to course. Send us the ages and we will confirm with the course before we lock the booking in, so nobody in your group gets turned away on the day.

Courses also advise against riding if you are pregnant or have heart, back or neck trouble. That is their rule and they hold to it.

What if you are scared of heights?

Say so at the briefing. The guides deal with this all day and they are good at it. What settles most people is that you are sitting in a harness rather than standing on an edge, and the cable takes your weight before you ever leave the platform. The first line on nearly every course is deliberately short and low so you can find out how it feels before anything bigger.

If someone in your group decides they really do not want to ride, that is fine. Most courses have a viewing area and a bar, and we will plan the day so one person can wait comfortably while the rest go.

Which zipline should you pick?

We book a few different versions. The standard forest canopy circuit has multiple lines and finishes with a ride out over the river, and that is the one most people mean when they say ziplining. The zipline over Dunn's River Falls is a short ride with the best view of the day, and it works well on the same visit as climbing the falls. At Mystic Mountain the zipline comes bundled with the Sky Explorer chairlift, the bobsled and the infinity pool, which suits families who want more than one thing in one stop.

Can you fit ziplining into a day with something else?

Easily. It is a half day at most, so it sits comfortably beside Dunn's River Falls, river tubing or an afternoon on the beach. Because we drive, you are not parking, navigating or watching the clock on a rental car. Your driver waits at the course, keeps your bags in the van and takes you straight to whatever comes next.

If you want to add ziplining to your trip, book a tour and tell us where you are staying and how many people are riding. If you are still sorting out how to get from the airport, we also run private airport transfers from Sangster in Montego Bay to any resort on the island.

Frequently asked questions

How long does ziplining in Jamaica take?

The course itself usually runs about two to three hours, from the safety briefing to the last line. Add the drive from your hotel and it works out to roughly half a day. That still leaves room for a beach stop or a second excursion in the afternoon.

Is there a weight limit for ziplining in Jamaica?

Most courses on the island cap riders somewhere around 250 to 265 pounds, with a minimum near 60 to 70 pounds. The exact limits differ from one course to another. Tell us who is riding and we will confirm the numbers with the course before your booking is locked in.

Do you need experience to go ziplining?

None at all. The guides fit your harness, clip you onto the cable and slow you down at the far platform. Your only job is to sit back into the harness and lift your feet. The first line is short and low so you can get used to the feeling before the longer ones.

Can you zipline over Dunn's River Falls?

Yes. There is a zipline that runs directly over the falls and back. It is a short ride with the best view of the day, and most guests pair it with climbing Dunn's River on the same visit. We can arrange both in one day with your driver waiting between the stops.
