Where to Watch the Sunset in Jamaica (and What to Do After)

The sun in Jamaica goes down somewhere between about 5:30 in late November and just before 7:00 in early July, and the island never changes its clocks, so the time drifts slowly through the year. The west coast gets the best of it, which is why Negril is where most people end up. Get in place about 45 minutes early, because the last part happens fast.

We run sunset trips out of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios most weeks, so here is what our drivers tell people before they go.

What time does the sun set in Jamaica?

Roughly 5:30 to 5:45 in November and December, closer to 6:15 in March, and just under 7:00 in June and July. Jamaica stays on the same time all year, no clock change in the spring or the fall. What that means for your evening: in winter, a sunset plan finishes early and you are back at the hotel in time for dinner. In summer, the sun is still up while you are thinking about eating.

The part nobody mentions is how quickly it goes. This close to the equator there is no long, slow dusk. From the moment the sun touches the water to full dark is about half an hour. So do not plan to arrive at 6:45 for a 6:50 sunset.

Where is the best sunset in Jamaica?

Negril, and it is not close. The west end faces straight out at open water with nothing in the way, so the sun drops into the sea instead of behind a hill.

Rick's Cafe sits on the cliffs and is the loudest and most photographed of them. Cliff divers, a bar, live music, a big crowd. Seven Mile Beach is the quiet version of the same view, where you can stand in the sand with a drink from a beach bar and watch the same sun without the noise.

Down on the south coast, Pelican Bar is a shack built on stilts out in the shallow sea. The late afternoon light out there is something else because water surrounds you on every side. Boat timing depends on the captain, so if you want to be out there near golden hour, tell us when you book and we will work it out.

Up in the hills above Kingston, Strawberry Hill looks out over the plains and the harbour. Cooler air, a slower evening, and a view down at the city lights coming on one section at a time.

Is Rick's Cafe worth it, and when should we get there?

It is worth doing once, and the timing is the whole thing. Get there in the early afternoon, around 2:00 or 3:00, and you can watch the divers, get a seat and settle in properly. Turn up at 5:00 and you are standing in a crowd behind other people's phones.

The other half of the trick is leaving. The minute the sun is gone, the tour buses and the catamaran groups all move at once and the road out of Negril backs up. We usually tell our people to stay put another 30 or 40 minutes, finish a drink, and let it clear.

If you would rather not think about the driving at all, the catamaran cruise to Rick's Cafe comes in from the water and hands the timing to somebody else. You can book a tour either way.

Can you do this from Montego Bay or Ocho Rios?

From Montego Bay, yes, easily. Negril is about an hour and a half each way on the coast road, so a sunset run is an afternoon and an evening, not a quick errand.

From Ocho Rios it is a long day. You are looking at roughly three hours each way to Negril, which means leaving around midday and getting back late. Most people staying in Ocho Rios do better watching the sunset closer to home, from the waterfront or a west-facing stretch of beach, and saving Negril for a full day trip.

What should you bring?

A light layer, because the wind picks up on the cliffs once the sun is down. Cash for drinks and tips, since not every bar takes cards. Bug spray if you are anywhere near a river or mangrove. And a real plan for getting home, which is the part people forget until they need it.

What is there to do after dark?

Near Falmouth, the Luminous Lagoon is a night thing by definition. You go out on a boat after dark and the water lights up around the hull, and around you if you get in. It is the one thing on this island that still surprises people who think they have seen everything.

Otherwise the evening here is dinner, a beach bar, and music. Just sort out your ride before you start drinking. Roads outside the towns are dark and narrow in places, with no street lighting, and the turns are not obvious if you do not know them. That is the honest reason we run sunset trips as a round trip with the same driver waiting. Nobody wants to be looking for a way home at nine at night in a parish they have never been to.
