What to Do in Jamaica When It Rains

Rain almost never ruins a day in Jamaica. Most showers come down hard for twenty minutes to an hour, then the sun returns and the road dries out. The trick is to move your plan around the weather instead of cancelling it, and there is plenty on this island that works just as well wet.

We drive guests through the wet months every year and we rarely lose a full day to rain. Here is how we handle it.

How long does rain usually last in Jamaica?

Not long. A typical shower on the north coast runs about twenty minutes to an hour, often in the afternoon. October is our wettest month and even then most days still give several hours of sun. It is normal to see people back on the beach an hour after a heavy downpour.

So do not cancel your day at 8am because the sky looks grey. Call your driver, ask what it looks like along the route, and shift your start time by an hour or two if that makes sense. We watch the sky for a living.

Which tours still run when it rains?

Plenty of them. These are the ones we point people toward when the weather turns:

• Appleton Estate Tour. The distillery walk and the tastings are under roof, and the drive through the countryside is beautiful in the mist.
• Green Grotto Caves. You are underground, so rain makes no difference at all.
• Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, or the Culture Yard tour in Trench Town. Both are mostly indoors and neither one needs sunshine.
• Blue Mountain Coffee Tour. The mountains catch cloud most days anyway. A hot cup up there in the cool air is a good way to spend a wet morning.
• Montego Bay or Ocho Rios shopping. Craft markets and duty-free shops are covered and the afternoon passes quickly.
• Luminous Lagoon. A cloudy night is not a problem here. The glow shows up best when the sky is dark, so overcast actually works in your favour.

Are the waterfalls better or worse in the rain?

Usually better. Dunn's River Falls and YS Falls run stronger after rain, and you are already soaked climbing them, so a shower overhead changes nothing about your day.

The one thing to keep in mind is that very heavy rain up in the hills can turn the water cloudy or push an operator to close a section for safety. That is not common, but it happens. Ask before you commit to the drive.

River tubing and bamboo rafting work the same way. A little rain is fine. A long day of heavy rain upriver can lift the water enough that the captains hold off, and if that happens we will tell you straight rather than drive you an hour for nothing.

What should you bring for a rainy day?

Keep it simple:

• A light rain jacket or a cheap poncho. Umbrellas are awkward in the wind here.
• A dry bag or a zip-lock for your phone. This is the one people forget.
• Water shoes with grip. Wet limestone at the falls and in the caves is slippery.
• A spare shirt to leave in the vehicle. Sitting in a wet shirt under air conditioning for an hour is miserable.

Cotton takes a long time to dry in this humidity, so anything quick-dry earns its space in the bag.

Do the roads get bad in the rain?

Some spots do, briefly. A few low sections on the north coast road hold water during a heavy downpour, and the mountain routes toward Kingston and the Blue Mountains get slick. Our drivers know which stretches to avoid and when it is smarter to wait ten minutes for the water to run off.

Drive times can stretch a bit in weather, so build in a buffer if you have a flight or a booked start time on the other end.

This is also the main reason we tell first-timers not to self-drive during a wet week. Unfamiliar roads, driving on the left, rain and narrow shoulders is a lot to take on at once.

Is it worth booking a driver on a rainy day?

We think so, and not only because it is our business. A private vehicle means you can change the plan mid-morning without losing your money, and you have someone local reading the weather alongside you. If the coast is grey we head inland. If the hills are wet we stay near the sea.

If you are coming in the wetter months it is worth knowing that hotel rates drop and the island is quieter. For a lot of our guests the occasional shower is a fair trade for that.
