What Time Should You Leave for Montego Bay Airport on Departure Day?
Not sure what time to leave for Montego Bay airport? Here are the real pickup times we use from Negril, Ocho Rios and MoBay.

Plan to be inside Sangster International in Montego Bay about three hours before an international flight, then work backwards and add your drive time. From a MoBay hotel that usually means leaving around three and a half hours before departure. From Negril or Ocho Rios it is closer to five hours. Below are the pickup times our drivers actually use, and what the last morning really looks like.
How long is the drive to Montego Bay airport from my hotel?
These are the times we plan for on a normal morning, door to airport curb:
- Montego Bay hotels and the Hip Strip: 10 to 25 minutes
- Ironshore and Rose Hall: about 20 to 30 minutes
- Falmouth: about 45 minutes
- Runaway Bay: about an hour and a half
- Ocho Rios: about two hours
- Negril: about an hour and a half to two hours
- Kingston: about three and a half to four hours
Weekday mornings through Montego Bay town move slower than the map says, especially between 7 and 9. Sunday mornings are the easiest drive of the week. We build the traffic into the pickup time rather than hoping for a clear road.
What time will we pick you up?
Take your flight time, subtract three hours for the airport, subtract the drive, then subtract another twenty minutes for loading bags and any small delay. A few real examples:
- Flight at 2:00pm, staying in Montego Bay: pickup around 10:15am
- Flight at 2:00pm, staying in Negril: pickup around 8:30am
- Flight at 2:00pm, staying in Ocho Rios: pickup around 8:15am
- Flight at 7:00am, staying in Negril: pickup around 1:30am
That last one is not a typo. Very early flights out of MBJ mean a middle-of-the-night start from the far ends of the island. If your flight home leaves before 8am and you are staying in Negril, Ocho Rios or Kingston, think about spending your final night at a hotel closer to Montego Bay. It costs a little more and it buys you three or four hours of sleep.
Do you really need three hours at Sangster?
Most airlines close the check-in desk about an hour before departure, and the desks open around four hours before. So your usable window is narrower than it sounds. Three hours gives you room to check bags, clear immigration and security, and still sit down with a drink before boarding.
The queues are heaviest in the early morning push and again in the late afternoon, and July, August and December are the busiest months of the year at MBJ. A quiet midday flight in low season can be done comfortably on two hours. The problem is that you only find out it was a busy morning once you are standing in the line, and by then the cushion is gone.
Once you are through security the terminal is small. Even the far gates are a short walk, so there is no need to sprint.
What do you do between checkout and pickup?
Checkout at most hotels is 11am, and a lot of flights leave in the afternoon. You have three decent options:
- Ask the front desk to hold your luggage. Nearly every property will, and most let you keep using the pool, beach and bar for the rest of the day.
- Ask about late checkout. Some hotels give it free when they are not full, others charge for the extra hours. Ask the night before, not on the morning.
- Add a stop on the way. If you are leaving from the MoBay side with time to spare, we can stop at the craft markets and duty-free shops, or drop you at Doctor's Cave Beach for a last swim before the airport run. Tell us when you book so the driver plans the timing.
Change your last handful of Jamaican dollars before you leave the resort area if you want to, though card works fine at the airport shops.
What is departure day at MBJ actually like?
Your driver pulls up at the departures level, not the arrivals hall where you came in. Porters will offer to take your bags to the counter. That is a normal service here and a small tip in US dollars is the custom if you use them. After check-in you go through immigration and then security, and you keep your boarding pass handy the whole way.
You do not pay a departure tax at the counter. On regular commercial tickets it is built into the fare already. There is a paid fast-track and lounge service at the airport if you want to skip ahead of the line and sit somewhere quiet, but it is optional and plenty of people do just fine without it.
One last thing worth checking the night before: your bag weight. The scales at MBJ are honest, and a raft of rum bottles and craft-market wood carvings adds up faster than people expect.
Book the ride before you need it
We set return pickups when you book your arrival, so the same company that met you at the airport is the one waiting outside your lobby on the last morning. Your driver watches your flight and adjusts if the departure time moves. You can arrange private airport transfers both ways in one go, or book a tour for that last free day before you fly.
Frequently asked questions
How early should I get to Montego Bay airport for an international flight?
Three hours before departure is the safe number at Sangster International. Most airlines close their check-in desk about an hour before the flight, so a two-hour arrival leaves you very little room if the line is slow. In July, August and December, when the airport is at its busiest, stick with three hours.
How long is the drive from Negril to Montego Bay airport?
Plan on an hour and a half to two hours from a Negril hotel to the airport curb. The road runs along the coast and it is a pretty drive, but it is not a fast one, so we do not cut it close. For an afternoon flight that usually puts your pickup in the middle of the morning.
Do I pay a departure tax when I leave Jamaica?
On a normal commercial ticket, no. The departure tax has been built into the airfare for years, so there is nothing to pay at the check-in counter or before security. A few charter or unusual tickets are the exception, so check your booking confirmation if you flew in on a charter.
What if my flight home is very early in the morning?
An early flight from Negril, Ocho Rios or Kingston means a pickup in the small hours of the morning, sometimes before 2am. If that sounds rough, move to a hotel near Montego Bay for your last night so the drive is twenty minutes instead of two hours. We can handle that hop for you the day before.
