Yes, KFC in Jamaica tastes different from the one at home. The seasoning goes deeper into the meat, there is more pepper in it, and the sides are Jamaican rather than American. Locals eat it constantly, and guests ask us about it more than you would think, so here is the straight answer.

We get this question in the van at least once a week, usually from somebody who spotted the red and white sign on the way in from the airport and could not work out why the parking lot was full at nine at night.

Is KFC in Jamaica actually different from KFC at home?

It is. The chicken is seasoned harder, right through to the bone, and it carries more pepper than the North American version. People who eat it back home and then eat it here usually notice on the first piece.

The bigger difference is what comes with it. You can get rice and peas instead of fries, which is the same rice and peas you would get at a cook shop, cooked with coconut milk and kidney beans. Festival, the slightly sweet fried dough, turns up alongside the chicken too. That combination does not exist at a KFC in Toronto or Atlanta.

Why is KFC such a big deal in Jamaica?

It has been here a long time. The first one opened in Kingston back in 1975, on Old Hope Road, and the chain is run locally by Restaurants of Jamaica rather than dropped in from outside. There are around forty of them now, spread across most of the parishes.

The story people like telling is the McDonald's one. McDonald's tried Jamaica and pulled out of the island in 2005 because it could not compete. Whatever else you think about fast food, that says something about how attached this country is to fried chicken.

What should you order the first time?

Get the original recipe if you want a fair comparison with home, because that is where the difference shows up clearest. Ask for rice and peas instead of fries. If they have festival, take it.

The spicy option is genuinely spicy by American standards, so if you do not eat pepper, start with the original and work up.

Where is the KFC in Montego Bay?

The main one sits on Howard Cooke Boulevard, on the road that runs along the water. It is not on the Hip Strip itself, so you will not stumble into it walking out of your hotel on Gloucester Avenue, but it is a two minute detour by car.

There are others around the island, including Ocho Rios, Negril and plenty in Kingston. Your driver will know the nearest one.

Will your driver stop at KFC?

Yes, just ask. We do not sell this as a tour and we are not going to pretend it is a cultural experience, it is a stop on the way to somewhere. Tell your driver at the start of the day rather than when you are already running late for a catamaran, because the line can be long. Twenty minutes at peak is normal and nobody is in a rush behind the counter.

Bring Jamaican dollars if you can. Cards work at most locations, but cash moves faster.

Should you really eat KFC on a Jamaican vacation?

Here is the honest version. Try it once if you are curious, because it is a real part of daily life here and it is genuinely not the same product you get at home. But do not spend your good meals on it.

The food you will remember is the jerk chicken off a drum pan by the roadside, a hot patty from a bakery, escovitch fish on the south coast with the pickled peppers and onions on top, and festival from a cook shop where somebody's aunt is doing the frying. Ask your driver where he eats. He will not send you to KFC.
