Dunn's River Falls or YS Falls: Which Jamaica Waterfall Should You Pick?
Dunn's River Falls or YS Falls? Drive times, crowds, kids and what to pair each waterfall with, from drivers who go every week.

If you only have one waterfall day in Jamaica, pick Dunn's River Falls when you are staying in Ocho Rios or want the famous hand-in-hand climb, and pick YS Falls when you are staying in Negril or on the south coast and would rather swim in quiet pools than queue on the rocks. Both are real waterfalls you climb into, not just look at. The real difference is crowds, drive time and what the rest of the day looks like.
We drive guests to both every week, so here is how we help people choose.
What is Dunn's River Falls actually like?
Dunn's River Falls is a terraced limestone waterfall about 600 feet long that runs right down into the sea just west of Ocho Rios town. You start at the beach, join a guide-led chain of climbers and work your way up the tiers, stopping in natural pools along the way. The climb takes most groups about 45 minutes to an hour, and there are steps alongside the falls if anyone wants to bail out part way.
There are lockers, changing rooms, a craft market at the exit and a lot of people. On days when cruise ships are docked in Ocho Rios (usually mid week), the falls fill up fast from mid morning. Entry is about US$25 for adults and less for children, and the park opens around 8:30 in the morning.
If you want the full picture of the climb itself, read our guide on climbing Dunn's River Falls.
What is YS Falls like, and why is it quieter?
YS Falls is on a working estate in St. Elizabeth, on the south coast, well off the usual resort strip. From the entrance a tractor-pulled jitney takes you through the pasture to the falls. The falls come down in seven tiers with pools at the bottom, rope swings into the deeper water, and a couple of spring-fed swimming pools near the picnic area for anyone who wants calm water.
You are not climbing in a chain here. You walk the steps and boardwalk beside the tiers, pick a pool and swim, swing, or sit under the water. Lifeguards are on duty, and a canopy zipline runs over the falls as an optional extra. Entry is about US$20 for adults. YS Falls is closed on Mondays, and the gates close in the mid afternoon (around 3:30), so this is a morning or early afternoon stop, never a late one.
The crowds are a fraction of Dunn's River. After heavy rain the water can run brown for a day or two, which is normal for a river fed by the hills.
How long is the drive to each one?
This is where most people decide. Approximate drive times with our drivers:
- Ocho Rios to Dunn's River Falls: about 10 minutes.
- Montego Bay to Dunn's River Falls: about an hour and a half on the North Coast highway.
- Negril to Dunn's River Falls: about three hours each way, which makes it a long day.
- Negril to YS Falls: about an hour and a half through Savanna-la-Mar and Black River.
- Montego Bay to YS Falls: about an hour and three quarters, inland through the hills.
- Ocho Rios to YS Falls: close to three hours, so we rarely suggest it from there.
So the honest rule of thumb is: Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay guests go to Dunn's River, Negril and south coast guests go to YS Falls, and Montego Bay guests can do either and should choose on crowds and the rest of the day.
Which one is better with kids or nervous swimmers?
YS Falls is the easier day for small children, grandparents and anyone who does not love slippery rocks. The pools are calm, the shallow spring-fed pools have no current, and nobody is pulling you up a waterfall. Dunn's River Falls is fine for confident kids who can hold a hand and keep their footing, but the climb does ask for a bit of nerve and balance.
For either one, bring water shoes (you can rent them at Dunn's River, but your own fit better), a towel, a change of clothes and a waterproof pouch for your phone.
What can you pair each waterfall with?
Dunn's River Falls sits in the middle of Ocho Rios, so it pairs easily with the Blue Hole, Mystic Mountain, Dolphin Cove or river tubing, and you can still be back at the hotel for dinner.
YS Falls is the anchor of a south coast day. The classic combination is YS Falls in the morning, then the Appleton Estate rum tour about half an hour away, or a boat ride out to the Pelican Bar for a drink on the water in the afternoon. You can fit two of those three comfortably from Negril or Montego Bay, but not all three without rushing.
So which should you book?
Pick Dunn's River Falls if you want the famous climb, you are based in Ocho Rios, or you are coming off a cruise ship and need to be back on board by late afternoon. Pick YS Falls if you want space, calm water, a countryside drive and a day that ends with rum or a sea bar. If you have two days and are staying in Montego Bay, do both, and do YS Falls on the day you want to relax.
Either way, a private driver takes the guesswork out of it. We handle the pickup, the timing around cruise crowds and Monday closures, and the stops for jerk chicken on the way home. You can book a tour for either waterfall, or if you are still landing, start with our private airport transfers and plan the waterfall day with your driver once you arrive.
Frequently asked questions
Is YS Falls open every day?
No. YS Falls is closed on Mondays and the gates close in the mid afternoon, around 3:30, so plan it as a morning stop. Dunn's River Falls is open daily from about 8:30 in the morning. We check both before we set your pickup time.
Can you do Dunn's River Falls and YS Falls on the same day?
We do not recommend it. They are on opposite sides of the island and the drive between them is close to three hours, which would leave almost no time in the water. Do them on separate days, or pick the one closest to your hotel.
Which waterfall is better for young children?
YS Falls is the easier day for small children. The pools are calm, there are shallow spring-fed swimming pools, and nobody has to climb slippery rocks. Dunn's River Falls works for confident kids who can hold a hand on the climb.
Do I need water shoes for Dunn's River Falls and YS Falls?
Yes, for both. The rocks at Dunn's River are smooth and wet and the climb is much easier with grip, and at YS Falls you walk on wet steps and rock around the pools. You can rent shoes at Dunn's River, but your own pair fits better.
