When is the dry season in Jamaica?

Dry season runs from about mid-December into April. Rain is light in these months, usually less than three inches across a whole month, the skies stay bright, and the water holds that clear turquoise color you see on approach into Montego Bay. Daytime temperatures sit around the low 80s Fahrenheit in January and climb a little from there. This is the easy season for beach days, catamaran cruises, and long cross-island drives, since the roads stay clear and the falls run at a comfortable level.

When is high season, and why does everything cost more?

High season lines up almost exactly with the best weather, from mid-December to mid-April. The busiest and priciest stretch is Christmas through New Year, when flights and hotels book out weeks ahead and rates jump. February and March stay full too, though a touch easier to plan around. If your heart is set on those winter dates, book your transfer and tours early. What about hurricane season?

Hurricane season across the Caribbean runs June through November. Most of that time you will never see a storm. The real risk climbs from about mid-to-late August into October, and September and October are the wettest, quietest months on the island. A direct hit is rare, but a few days of heavy rain can push a boat tour or a river day. Which months are cheapest to visit Jamaica?

The lowest prices land in late summer and early fall, roughly August through early November, and September is often the single cheapest month. Late April, May, and early June also bring softer hotel rates, sometimes real discounts, while the weather still leans mostly dry. If your budget matters more than a packed beach, those are the smart windows to fly in.

Does it rain a lot in the summer?

Jamaica has two wetter stretches, one around May into June and another from September into November. Even in those months, rain here is usually a short, heavy afternoon shower that clears out and lets the sun back in within an hour. Montego Bay is one of the wetter corners of the island, with May often its rainiest month. July and August stay warm and busy because that is when schools in the States and Canada let out, so the resorts fill with families even with a passing shower in the mix.

When should you come to skip the crowds?

Two windows do this well. The first is late April and May, right after the winter rush clears out, when the island quiets down but the weather stays dry. The second is November into the first week of December, before the Christmas crowd lands, when the hotels have finished their off-season upkeep and the beaches feel calm. Is there a good time for reggae and events?

If reggae is your reason for coming, aim for July. Reggae Sumfest, the biggest music festival on the island, happens in July and draws a big crowd for a week of shows and street parties.
